Young Artist Program

Who are the Young Artists?
The Opera Colorado Young Artists are a group of five singers who bring opera directly to schools and other community venues throughout Colorado and surrounding states. These young professionals come to Denver for a period of approximately seven months to perform in education programs, touring operas, and a student matinee of a mainstage production. The singers receive training and coaching from Opera Colorado staff and guest artists.

What kind of education programs do they perform?
The Young Artists participate in many of our education programs, including the Arias & Ensembles recital program, Backstage Workshops, and touring operas. They may also have the chance to perform selected roles in mainstage performances. Please explore the "School and Community Programs" section on our website for detailed descriptions of our programs.

I'm interested in applying!
Applications are accepted during a brief time in the spring; check back for details. Applicants should have considerable experience performing leading roles in opera on the graduate and/or young artist level. Artists are contracted for a seven-month residency, September through May, and receive a $1700 monthly stipend. Artists are responsible for their own transportation and housing while in Denver.

Auditions are typically held in the spring in Denver and New York City. Applicants will be expected to prepare 5 selections of contrasting styles and languages with specific guidelines to be determined. Applicants must also prepare a 15 second introduction for each aria, presented as if speaking to an audience of elementary school children.

Stage presence, characterization, movement, and the candidate’s ability to interact with students will be taken into consideration equally with vocal and stylistic qualities. Please keep this in mind when choosing your selections.
