Mozart’s Così fan tutte: “All Women Are Like That”

Trivial. Artificial. Ridiculous. Adjectives applied to Mozart’s Così fan tutte in his own time. Immoral. Shocking. Licentious. Adjectives applied to Così during the 19th and early 20th centuries. Why such strong—and divergent— responses? Consider the plot, which once was summarized as, “... two young blades go off on a bet that their girlfriends will be faithful, come back in disguise, make love to each other’s girl and find that they aren’t.” Immerse yourself in the story and characters of this opera under the guidance of two experts who understand Mozart’s balance of comedy and tragedy as well as his music. In the first session, Stephen Seifert, executive director of the Newman Center for the Performing Arts, discusses Così’s music and the opera’s changing reputation over time. What does it mean when audiences in one age cheer it and in a later age decry it? Next up, Larry Glenn, associate professor of voice at Lamont School of Music and former Così director, digs deep into characterization. From Peter Sellars’ comedic masterpiece to Lesley Koenig’s televised production from “The Met,” explore the various character interpretations from a director’s standpoint. How do they compare/contrast? Where does a director find comedic touches to underscore the “Battle of the Sexes”? Take your new appreciation to Opera Colorado’s production of Così and form your own response. Performance ticket included. 10% course discount to OC subscribers.
