Romeo & Juliet
“In fair Verona where we lay our scene.” Journey with us as we present the world-famous love story of Romeo & Juliet. Gounod’s opera is based on the play by William Shakespeare. Follow the “star-crossed lovers” Romeo and Juliet as they meet and fall in love, choosing to risk everything for each other. What lesson can be learned from their actions? The story unfolds through rich, sumptuous music as well as scenes from Shakespeare’s original play and is sung in English (with portions in the original French). Updated staging and costumes help the audience of today relate to a story written long ago – that is still relevant and important. A wonderful tool when teaching literature or discussing difficult social subjects, this one-act opera can also be paired with an In-School Workshop on Shakespeare.
