Opera Colorado Today
As one of Denver’s leading performing arts institutions, Opera Colorado plays an important role in the cultural fabric of the City of Denver and the State of Colorado. For more than two decades, Opera Colorado has presented compelling opera performances at the Denver Performing Art Complex. From 1983 to 1992, Opera Colorado presented two productions annually exclusively in Boettcher Concert Hall. Then in 1992 the season expanded to present three productions, adding the Buell Theatre as a second home during the winter season. For the next thirteen years little changed at Opera Colorado as the company continued to split its season between these two performance venues not intended for opera performance.

Opera Colorado entered a new era in its distinguished history on September 10, 2005, when it opened the Ellie Caulkins Opera House with a gala celebration featuring some of today’s most recognized opera stars. The new facility allows the company greater flexibility in scheduling performances, the ability to engage other prominent opera companies from across the United States and Canada in co-productions, and the opportunity to attract the attention of national and international press. Most important, the Opera House has enabled the company to expand the number of performances presented each season in order to meet the rising demand for tickets.

Throughout its history, Opera Colorado has remained committed to presenting productions and education programs of the highest artistic merit by engaging much sought after opera luminaries, as well as offering opportunities to young emerging talent. Opera Colorado has built a reputation for presenting standard operatic repertoire in both traditional and innovative settings, which attract a diverse local, national and international audience.

For more than two decades, Opera Colorado has not simply endured; it has met numerous challenges with steadfast resolve, it has refused to compromise on artistic quality, and it has strategically planned for the future, ensuring that generations to come will have the opportunity to enjoy the beauty and passion of Grand Opera.
