Overview
Journey to early 20th-century Japan with Puccini's soaring tale of passion, devotion, and honor! Butterfly, the young Japanese bride of Naval officer Pinkerton, gives up her family and culture to be with her husband. When he leaves for America, she waits patiently with their son for three years, only to be devastated when he returns to Japan with an American wife. Faced with a choice between life without honor or death with dignity, Butterfly must make the ultimate sacrifice.

This production will be staged by its original director, Ron Daniels. Mr. Daniels has a distinguished history with the Royal Shakespeare Company and has worked with the Royal National Theatre of Great Britain, The Shakespeare Theatre of Washington, D.C., and the Dallas Theater Center. The scenic design incorporates bold color with traditional concepts and costumes created by Michael Yeargan. A popular guest artist with Opera Colorado, Maestro Stephen Lord (La Traviata, 2007; Norma, 2006) returns to the podium to conduct.

This production was created for San Francisco Opera.

Madama Butterfly is sung in Italian with English and Spanish subtitles.
