Overview
Travel to the island of Ceylon in Bizet's exotic story of desire, friendship and sacrifice! Zurga, a fisherman, and Nadir, a hunter, have vowed to avoid the priestess who came between them years before. When she returns, however, Nadir and the priestess embrace their love, defying her sacred vows and threatening the men's friendship. The lovers' affair is discovered and they are sentenced to death, but are saved by Zurga, whose life the priestess saved years before.

This production will be mounted with its creative team. Australian Stage Director Andrew Sinclair has directed his acclaimed production for Michigan Opera Theater, Florida Grand Opera, New York City Opera and San Francisco Opera. Mr. Sinclair is joined by international fashion and textile designer Zandra Rhodes, who created the wildly colorful scenic and costume designs for The Pearl Fishers. The production features the artfully energetic choreography of John Maleshock. Sebastian Lang-Lessing, Chief Conductor and Artistic Director of the Tasmanian Symphony Orchestra, makes his company debut as conductor.

This production was created for San Diego Opera.

The Pearl Fishers is sung in French with English and Spanish subtitles.
